GEON-S

The Geonics of
 Paul-Emile Rioux
New Media Artist,  Paul-Emile Rioux presents  the Geon's project.

In Recognition by Components Theory,
Geons are the simple shapes, such as cones or spheres,
which form the building blocks of object recognition.

Dans la théorie de la reconnaissance par composant,
les Géons sont les formes simples,
telles que les cônes ou les sphères,
qui forment les blocs de construction de la reconnaissance d'objets.

These works continue a dialogue with landscape,
which has been ongoing in my past work, as well as form and meaning.

Dans le langage humain,
il y a moins de 55 phonèmes,
et de même, moins de 40 Géons
seraient nécessaires afin de représenter et d'identifier visuellement
presque tout ce qu'un être humain
peut rencontrer dans sa vie quotidienne

In all of human language,
there are fewer than 55 phonemes,
and similarly, fewer than 40 Geons
are required to visually represent and identify
almost everything a human being
may come across in his or her daily life.

Landscape becomes a field of possibilities.

In physics a Geon is a theoretical entity.
Geon is a contraction of “gravitational electromagnetic entity”
and was coined by the theoretical physicist John Archibald Wheeler.

" Wheeler later proved geons would either ‘blow up’ or ‘implode’ very quickly if they were ever to form. However he also gave us the tantalising suggestion that maybe geons had a very brief existence in the early universe, or perhaps they are flashing into and out of existence right now."
Lilian, University of Lancaster, Student Blog,

In this series, the images are not necessarily visually complicated, in fact they are often rather sparse.

We, as actors looking, create and limit the possibilities of the out there.

Landscapes must constantly
be created and recreated
by the act of viewing, observing.

“Physical objects are postulated entities which round out and simplify our account of the flux of existence… The conceptual scheme of physical objects is a convenient myth, simpler than the literal truth and yet containing the literal truth as scattered part.”
Willard van Orman Quine

My landscapes do not exist, but nor are they wholly imaginary. They exist in some in-between zone. They are like geons which, while familiar, do not resolve into immediately perceivable objects. They both exist
and do not exist, as if in some superposed state.

A complete catalogue can be provided upon request for the Geon's Project.
